Position Title: Communications and Operations Manager

Location: Remote, current staff live in New York City, the District of Columbia, and Columbia, SC

Reports to: Co-Lead and Chief Network Weaver

Status: Full-time, exempt

Position Summary

The Horizons Project is strengthening relationships and connections among the social justice, peacebuilding, and democracy communities in the United States, with the goal of reinforcing our collective efforts to address systemic injustices, advance societal healing, and build a truly inclusive and pluralistic democracy. Launched as an independent initiative in 2022 under the auspices of fiscal sponsor New Venture Fund, the Project is led by a small team of experienced organizers, practitioners and academics with deep connections and credibility to navigate these diverse networks across the ideological spectrum and issue areas in the US.

The Horizons Project seeks a full-time Communications and Operations Manager to help develop and operationalize The Horizons Project communications strategy and key project operations, including events management. This position will play a pivotal role on the small and collaborative team by standing up a creative communications and events plan, while supporting internal operations to maximize efficiency and resources. Strong candidates will be excellent communicators and have experience working in start-up and/or fast-paced and collaborative environments.

 Responsibilities and Tasks

  • In partnership with the Chief Network Weaver, develops and operationalizes The Horizons Project communications strategy
  • Develops multimedia and written content to share the Project’s insights and amplify the work of the Project’s partners across social media platforms and website
  • Produces Project overview materials and summary documents in preparation for key meetings with partners, Braintrust and Advisory Board members
  • Manages and maintains The Horizons Project website and social media platforms
  • Supports team operational and project planning processes
  • Serves as events coordinator for Horizons Project public events and salon convenings, including managing virtual platforms and technology-based facilitation tools
  • Conducts research on ecosystem partners to inform partnership and outreach strategy
  • Manages CRM system and evaluation metrics for impact reporting

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in communications, peacebuilding, social justice, democracy and governance, or a related field
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience, preferably with emphasis in digital and traditional communications and event management (can include volunteer organizing experience)
  • Demonstrated interest in the fields of peacebuilding, nonviolent action, and/or democracy
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills; can plan and prioritize own work; has a collaborative work ethic
  • Excellent event and operational management skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including digital content generation, experience with WordPress and social media analytic platforms is a plus
  • Must be a quick learner, self-starter, well-organized, and attentive to detail
  • Must be able to multi-task and work under deadlines in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $75,000 (based on location and experience)

Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance; 3% automatic contribution and a 3% employer match on 401(k) contributions; pre-tax transportation benefits; and paid holiday, vacation, sick, and volunteer time off.
