Making Political Violence and Repression Backfire

Posted on: February 26, 2026

Harnessing Our Power to End Political Violence and Repression

Political violence, threats of political violence, and repression are key components of the authoritarian playbook.

Autocrats condone, exploit, and even orchestrate these acts to spread fear, silence dissent, and hold onto power. These acts are a direct assault on US democracy, the Constitution, and the rights and freedoms of people across the nation.

Harnessing Our Power to End Political Violence (HOPE) aims to build our collective muscle to counter political violence and repression and strengthen our democracy by:

Resource Sharing

HOPE provides key resources about political violence and repression and practical tools to help communities plan local backfire actions.

Training

HOPE empowers communities around the country with the knowledge, skills, and tools to make political violence and repression backfire through in-person and live virtual trainings, and a self-guided online course.

Storytelling

The HOPE team and network of trainers gather and share stories from around the country of the ways communities have mobilized nonviolently to push back against political violence and repression

As a founding member of the Harnessing Our Power to End Political Violence initiative, Horizons is committed to empowering communities around the country to make political violence and repression backfire.

By working together through collective nonviolent action, everyday people can help protect their communities from these acts and, in doing so, strengthen our democracy.
