Catalyzing Change through Learning

Historic wins in U.S. organizing —abolition, women’s suffrage, civil rights, voting rights, and marriage equality—were achieved through long-term strategy, strong relationships, and robust movement infrastructure.

These victories came from decades of building skills, discipline, and networks, so movements could mobilize effectively at pivotal moments.

With authoritarianism on the rise globally, pro-democracy movements today need training and convening spaces to share lessons, imagine possible futures; and build strategy, skills, organizing capacity and relationships for coordinated action. Horizons is committed to expanding strategic learning opportunities for individuals and organizations within these movements in the U.S.

We provide capacity building that supports ecosystem organizing through a mix of block, bridge and build approaches. We offer intensive skills building in strategic nonviolent action and noncooperation, ecosystem organizing, and making political violence and repression backfire, among other topics. Horizons conducts applied research on authoritarian systems and the role of nonviolent action and civil resistance in transforming them; facilitates cross-border exchanges with pro-democracy movements abroad; and convenes spaces for innovation and sharing lessons learned.
